Do You Have Stale or Fresh Oil?

Ps. 92:10 says, “I shall be anointed with fresh oil.” The Anointing is the Presence of God. It’s one of the most important things in our lives.

Ps. 92:10 says, “I shall be anointed with fresh oil.”  The Anointing is the Presence of God.  It’s one of the most important things in our lives.  To anoint means, to rub; to smear.  God takes His Presence and smears it; He rubs it onto our lives.  As the Psalmist said, “I shall be anointed with fresh oil.”  How we need the Presence of God in our lives!  The presence of God is tangible.  We can sense His Presence daily.

Oil throughout the Bible is symbolic of the Holy Spirit.  It’s a type of His work in the earth.  In our lives, we need the oil of the Holy Spirit.  As we see in a car, small engine, or anything with moving parts, oil is necessary for lubrication.  It keeps things from seizing up.  When things are going wrong, when things aren’t going your way, and things are trying to get you upset, this is a sure indicator that you need more of the Presence of God-His fresh oil that keeps us from seizing up and becoming parked in the highway of life.

How do we have this fresh oil in life?  One way is by living a life of thanksgiving.  The Bible says to “enter into His gates with thanksgiving and into His courts with praise.”  We are to live our lives full of thanksgiving.  Thankful for the little things, big things and everything in between.  When we practice being thankful and express it out of our mouth, then God’s Presence will fill our lives.

Ephesians 5:18-19 declares, “Be not drunk with wine wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.”

This is God’s plan for every believer.  It’s not for just a select few or just for certain groups of people.  It’s for Baptists, Methodists, Pentecostals, or whatever denomination you may be.  The New Testament emphasizes being filled with the Spirit and it’s not just a little stream, it is an overflow.  In the original language, it denotes continuous action; “but be being filled with the Spirit,” something we continually do.

What happens when we have a life anointed with fresh oil?  We are filled to overflowing with the Spirit.  Part of that overflow is in having a new song, given by the Spirit of God.  Never lose your song.  That’s what revival is all about.  Revival is not just a special set of meetings we have in church.  Revival starts in you and it is having our hearts set on fire for Him.  When your heart is ablaze with Him, you’ll always have a song.

Ephesians 5:20 says, “Giving thanks always…” When you’re filled with the Holy Spirit, you’ll be full of thanksgiving.  No griping, no complaining and fussing. It’s easy to get exasperated and tired when we’re not conscious of Him.  But when we’re full of His Presence, we’ll be thankful.

A second way we can have a fresh anointing is by praying in other tongues.  First Corinthians 14:4 says, “He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself.” To edify means to build up.  In fact, the Greek Scholars agree a more accurate way would be to say, “He that speaks in an unknown tongue charges himself up like a battery.” When a battery is dead we hook it up and recharge it.  That’s what happens when we pray in the Spirit, in other tongues. Our spirit gets charged up and we are filled to overflowing with the Holy Spirit. We need to be refilled each and every day.

A third way we can have a fresh anointing is by the ministry of laying on of hands. Laying on of hands is a doctrine of Christ (Hebrews 6:1-2) and is foundational in a Christians life.  Much can be imparted through the ministry of laying on of hands.  All through the Book of Acts we see Paul, Peter, and John as well as others lay hands on people to receive the Holy Spirit.  And Paul told Timothy, “stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.” (2 Timothy 1:6) Many people mock this, but this is part of the basics of the doctrine of Christ. So, as we lay hands on people, the same Holy Spirit can come upon them and fill them to overflowing causing them to experience a fresh anointing.

The Good News is that it is available for every believer.  All you must do is get hungry and thirsty for more of Him.  Matthew 5:6 says, “Blessed are they which hunger and thirst after righteousness; for they shall be filled.”

So, make the decision not to live another day without His anointing.  Your life will be smoother than ever and the only thing that will seize up, will be the devil, when he sees that you are filled with the Presence of God.  Make the decision daily, “I shall be anointed with fresh oil.”

Is Healing in the Atonement? Part Two
