Is “Once Saved, Always Saved” Scriptural?

This is a debate that has gone on for centuries in the church. What is the answer? What does the Bible say concerning this?

“Once Saved, always saved.” This is a debate that has gone on for centuries in the church. What is the answer? What does the Bible say concerning this? We have to remember there are always two sources for our beliefs. Man’s opinions or the Word of God. We see many examples in the Word of God concerning our eternal salvation and how we must walk it out daily.

The Bible says in Romans 10:9-10 “that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” Verse 13 of the same chapter reads, “For whosoever calls upon the Name of the Lord shall be saved.” So we know that salvation is found only in the Name of Jesus. In fact, the Apostle Peter proclaimed in Acts 4:12 “Neither is there salvation in any other; for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” We can be assured that when we call on the Name of Jesus, we will be saved. But does that mean that we can never lose that salvation if we choose to not follow Him or worse yet, walk away from Him?

The Bible says in Hebrews 2:3, “How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord and was confirmed unto us by them that heard Him…” In the Book of Revelation, Jesus appeared to John, giving him different messages to seven different churches. In Revelation 3:11, Jesus says, “Behold, I come quickly; hold that fast which though hast that no man take thy crown.” We see Paul telling Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:13, “Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.” From both passages, the church is admonished to “hold fast”. The reason we have to hold fast to certain things, is because the devil is always trying to steal from God’s people. It’s no different with our salvation and where we will spend eternity.

Jesus said, “But he that shall endure to the end shall be saved.” (Matthew 24:13) What happens if you don’t endure to the end? Then you won’t be saved. You may fall away. Why? Because people let the things of the world come in and take them over.

In Luke 15, the Bible talks about the story of the prodigal son. He spent his inheritance on sin and riotous living. He is a type of the believer who “backslides”-who falls away. But thank God, He came back to the Father. There are many people today, who just like the prodigal son, need to come back to the Father. And be assured, the Father God is waiting to receive them back.

Another example is in James 5:20, “Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins. This can also apply to someone who has once known God, but walked away. It’s popular to believe we can live any which way in our lives, and still make it to Heaven.

Matthew 7:21-23 “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” People were doing good works but didn’t know Him. We must make sure, above all, that we have an intimate fellowship with the Lord, walking with Him daily. We should be concerned about pleasing God. When our lives please Him and we are serving Him, we can be sure that Heaven is our home. Can I be confident that I will be forever saved? Of course-as long as you stay in Christ. Next week, I’ll be sharing part two of this subject, so stay tuned.
