Does God Want Me Sick?
Pastor William Bedsole

The statement, “God is teaching me through this sickness.” How many times have we heard this? People assume that there must be a divine purpose in them being sick. The Bible clearly states in John 10:10, “The thief cometh not, but for to steal and to kill and to destroy; I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” It’s very clear from Scripture that the devil is the destroyer and Jesus is the Deliverer. Acts 10:38 says, “How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power, who went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed of the devil, for God was with Him.”

Many times it’s easier to accept everything in life as the will of God than to take responsibility to find the will of God. God doesn’t send sickness to people to teach them something. He doesn’t have any sickness and would have to steal it from the devil in order to give it to someone! My thought is always, “If sickness were sent to teach you something, what did you learn?” Many people suffer in life but never check to see what God’s will is in the matter. They assume whatever happens is the will of God.

No, God is the Healer, the Deliverer, the Blesser. It’s the goodness of God that draws people to Him. He’s just looking for someone to believe Him, so He can manifest His goodness in their life. But it’s easier to stand back and say, “Whatever the Lord wills.” So when sickness comes, learn to resist it. Realize it’s not a blessing in disguise…If it’s a curse, it never magically turns into a blessing. If it’s evil, it’s from the devil; if it’s good, it’s God. God gave us His Word in order that we find out the will of God. This is where the responsibility lies-with us. It is much easier to sit back and say “whatever the will of God is” and do nothing to find His perfect will. Jesus told His disciples in John 8:32, “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” It’s knowledge of the truth that sets us free.

Part of this knowledge is understanding that not only did Jesus pay for our sins but also for our sicknesses. Throughout His ministry, Jesus went about preaching, teaching and healing. Acts 10:38 clearly states that sickness is satanic oppression; but Jesus came to free us from sickness. We must simply accept what He’s already done. So when sickness and disease comes to you, don’t wonder in your mind if it’s God’s will to heal you or say “I’m suffering this sickness for the Lord.” Jesus came to free us from sickness. So if He took our sicknesses, why should we try to keep them?

So He’s not teaching you through a sickness. But if you will simply open the Word of God you can see Him saying, “I am the Lord that healeth thee.” (Exodus 15:26) It’s up to us to simply receive what He’s already done, taking Him at His Word. It’s that truth that shall make you free!
