Except the Lord Build the House |Pastor William Bedsole

During this time of year, many people evaluate their lives in light of a New Year. Promises are made. Good intentions are proclaimed for what people desire to have happen in their lives. Many are hoping for a better year than the previous one.

Yet in order to reach goals, we need vision from God. The only thing that will ultimately succeed is His plan for our lives; not just what we have planned to do. Psalm 127:1 says, “Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it.” Notice that the house got built, but they labored and it was in vain-because the Lord wasn’t in it. We must get God’s plan for our lives if we want things to go well. We must take time to pray, seek the Lord and get His will.

Proverbs 29:18a proclaims, “Where there is no vision, the people perish…” Another translation says, “the people suffer lack.” Not having a vision will result in a lack of progress and a lack of success. We must have vision to move forward. But more importantly we need the vision God wants for our lives.

In the heart of every person is a Plan-A chosen for us, specifically tailored just for us. Many times people will understand the importance of vision, yet they go on to make their own plans without consulting with God. Even in our college career days, for High School students, individuals think “What do I want to be?” The fact is, for a Christian, it’s never about what we want to be but discovering what I’ve been God-ordained to be; what He’s already planned for me. In fact, God already charted our course before we were born. We see this in the life of Jeremiah the prophet. God called Him as a prophet to the nations before He was born.

So in order to succeed in life, we must have the plan of God. But just because we have the right plan, doesn’t mean it will happen. We must also be diligent; staying focused on the vision until it comes to pass. Habakkuk 2:2-3 says, “Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.”

We must write the vision. This keeps it before us. If we can keep it before our eyes, we will more likely put the vision into practice. So as we enter into 2018, purpose in your life that you will have a vision for this year. A God-infused vision-and when you do, write the vision and keep it before you, and you will surely possess all that God has promised “because it will surely come, it will not tarry.”
